Wood + Starr is led by Allison Wood and Matt Starr, AIA, a husband-and-wife team whose complementary backgrounds bring architecture and interiors together in a thoughtful, integrated practice.
Allison brings extensive experience in residential architecture and interiors, including prior work with Jacobsen Architecture and Treacy & Eagleburger Architects, two Washington firms known for finely detailed homes. Born and raised in Washington, DC, and a graduate of National Cathedral School, she brings a strong understanding of the city’s neighborhoods, architecture, and residential character to her work.
With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art History from the University of Delaware and a Master of Architecture from the Catholic University of America, Allison approaches design with a refined understanding of composition, color, material, and detail. Her work balances restraint with warmth and playfulness, creating spaces that feel composed, inviting, and personal.
Matt is a licensed architect in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, with experience in residential, hospitality, restaurant, workplace, and commercial design. Before founding Wood + Starr, he worked with Edit Lab, Hickok Cole, and STUDIOS Architecture. He received both his undergraduate degree and Master of Architecture from the Catholic University of America.
His work focuses on architectural planning, hospitality design, permitting, consultant coordination, and construction documentation. Matt brings clarity to complex design, code, and construction issues, helping clients move through the design and building process with confidence.
Together, they combine Allison’s focus on composition, color, materials, and residential interiors with Matt’s experience in architectural planning, hospitality, technical coordination, and project delivery.
Their studio is based in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC, where they live with their two children, Parker and Mae, near where they first met and began their architectural education.
